Enchanters and cats

The Chronicles of Chrestomanci, Diana Wynne Jones, 4 vols. published 1977-1982

I have a neighbor who absolutely adores this writer, who has a long list of titles, including Howl’s Moving Castle (my copy has gone missing; must replace it). It took me nearly 15 years to start reading this series, but once I began, I had to finish. The characters and plots are complex and thrilling, and I could easily read another set about this alternative world.

Chrestomanci is an enchanter, a wizard/magician of the highest expertise, and we follow (although not in chronological order) his lives and adventures through these four books. Of course, he has to battle the evil enchanters who would destroy his world, or just merely take control. Sometimes he’s the main character, sometimes he comes in at some point to help out the hero or heroine in trouble.

A good series for summer vacation.
