Frank Asch

Happy Birthday, Moon (1982), Simon & Schuster, 28 pp.

A quick look at Asch’s website shows that this particular book is out of print (another member of the OOP club), so my daughter’s well-worn copy may be valuable.

This tiny treasure tells of Bear (about whom Asch has created several PBs) who decides to give the moon a birthday present. He travels far to find out what the moon wants and does his best to get the present to the moon.

The dark, matte colors are quiet without being gloomy (important for a book most of whose action occurs at night), making this a good bed-time book, and it’s text is simple without being boring or unnatural–a good starter book for children just beginning to read on their own.
